butterflies escher-style

This fabric reminds me of an M.C. Escher pattern—where objects lock into other objects (see left). The all-over design, indigo on white, is the type of fabric most quilters like to buy. ARRIVED. VERY COOL.

horses, horses and horses

The Japanese samurai warriors were similar to European knights in that they rode horses and wore armor. Their horses and swords were symbols of their power.

This is the first bolt of vintage yukata cotton that I have seen with horses on it!

ARRIVED. THIS IS A SOFT AND HIGH QUALITY COTTON.

chysanthemum extravagenza

Growing chrysanthemums in Japan is like a national sport. When Michael and I visited Miwa’s home in Matsuyama, we saw her father’s chrysanthemum greenhouse. Almost four feet in height, his mums were being groomed for a regional flower contest. This bolt of vintage yukata cotton celebrates Japan’s love of its imperial bloom. ARRIVED. MACHINE PRINTED BUT LOVELY QUALITY.

disaster in japan

My heart is broken by the terror and pain that has been inflicted on my friends and associates in Japan. One horrific disaster after another is beyond belief.

I pray: God be with the Japanese. Bring them a glimpse of hope and security in the middle of this nightmare. Care for them and bring them to safety.

I enjoy yukata bolts where the design keeps changing. Using this type of cotton in a quilt adds interest, such as in the Healing Garden quilt with its mustard-colored border. ARRIVED.

painterly water scenes

Ukai, or comorant fishing, has been practiced in Japan for over 1300 years. River fishermen keep the birds on leashes as they dive for sweetfish. This unique yukata bolt tells the story of this traditional fishing method. ARRIVED. THE BIRDS HAVE TWO SHADES OF BLUE IN THE ART.
